Yesterday I was chatting with a woman, and she was explaining to me how she’s been looking for jobs abroad online for over 2 years.
Every day Laura checks her email alerts from Indeed and Monster and scrolls through all of the newest jobs that have been posted since yesterday.
If she’s lucky there are 1 or 2 positions that she’s excited about and qualified for.
If so, Laura spends 20-30 minutes tweaking her cover letter and resume to fit the job descriptions. Then she goes through the process of filling out the online application and uploading her resume.
Laura has done this process now for 730 days! Applying to over 300 jobs abroad!
And guess what? She hardly hears back ANYTHING.
Most often she gets one of those automated responses that thanks her for an application and that is it.
Five times Laura’s received a call from the recruiter, but once they found out she didn’t have the right to work, the call ended shortly after.
At this point, she’s super frustrated and embarrassed because two years ago she told her friends and family about her dream to live abroad, and she hasn’t made ANY headway.
Living abroad has never seemed further away. Her self-esteem has tanked, and she’s at the point of calling it quits.
The bottom line is if Laura doesn’t change her abroad search strategy soon, she’s never going to live and work abroad.
She’ll have to settle for continuing to take week long vacations twice a year which only seem to increase her urge to live abroad and be in another culture! It’s like torture!
It absolutely does not have to be this way.
