Move Abroad and Then Find a Job?

Have you ever been told that if you want to live abroad, you just need to pack up, move, and find a job when you get there by pounding the pavement?

Let me save you a lot of stress and a quickly dwindling bank account.

About 3 years ago my friend Caitlin tried that exact same strategy. She saved up money, quit her job as a project manager, and went to London on a tourist visa determined to find a job.

Caitlin took as many meetings as she could with hiring managers while in England. She scoured online boards and used every connection.

She even went into all of the offices of the corporations she was targeting and hand delivered her resume!

She believed that if she just got on the ground then she could more easily find a job.

I mean, that’s what they tell you, right?

But what really happened?

Caitlin’s money started running out and her stress started soaring.

For a minute she was loving life abroad in London, but that didn’t last long as she felt pressured to find a job – any job – quick!

From day one she was on the clock to find something before her tourist visa expired.

Living on savings,  she couldn’t afford to go out to eat with friends or travel on the weekend. And she felt bad for taking up space on a friend’s couch week after week.

Caitlin was freaking out about having to return to the USA with no money and the task of finding another job back home.

And in the end, that is exactly what happened.

Caitlin went home disappointed and without a job abroad. She took on a contract position at her old company.

But she learned ONE BIG thing.  If she was going to get abroad for work, she needed a MUCH more comprehensive strategy.

First, she realized that if she wanted to get different results, she had to learn a new plan. That’s when she remembered seeing me on Facebook.

Together we found her unique value proposition. Then we uncovered what type of European employers would be in need of this. After we started locating positions in the hidden job market.

All while she was still earning money, sleeping in a bed, and having fun on the weekends.

Trying to find work abroad doesn’t have to be stressful and make you go broke. Instead it can be fun and financially rewarding.

But most of all, it can ACTUALLY HAPPEN!
